Everyone has a different escape, or something they do to help them get away. One aspect in popular culture today is that escape. It helps people in many different ways and is so flexible that everyone in the world is surely going to find something they enjoy. Music is a lot of peoples shrink, it has racked in some of the most ridiculous amounts of money for individuals, and ironically; with the potential money it can make; it is transforming into something it once was not. Music is more than entertainment for many people.
When life gets ‘tough’, get a helmet. For some, that helmet is listening to their favorite music. Whether it’s Taylor Swift, Mozart, or 50 cent, people continue to listen to music in order to concentrate, focus, or just relax. According to Peter Quily, adult Attention Deficit Disorder coach, music can have a physiological effect on his patients who suffer from adult ADD (1). Music is so flexible that people have music for different tasks of the day. For example, people enjoy the ‘hard’ stuff while working out or going for a run. For other tasks of the day, studying for example, people may prefer something a little less stressing on the ear… Mozart does it for many. So with the wide range of music available, it has become a doctor on its own, many rely on it to complete different tasks throughout the day. With the wide range of music, it makes it easier for different people to create their own money.
Entertainers are known to have the largest salaries in the world. For many of them, it starts with making music, eventually leading to a role in television or movies. Creating hits can possibly lead you in becoming a millionaire. Curtis Jackson, better known as 50 cent, like many other rappers, came from a tough childhood and was motivated to do well. He got into the industry by essentially telling his life stories in his songs. He now is a multi-million dollar man, with income from music, clothing, and movies (and anything done on the ‘side’). Like Curtis Jackson, many have come from nothing to create music in order to hit the jackpot. American Idol and other hit TV shows make it easier for regular people to strike big by creating ‘pleasure for the ear’. With money, music has evolved into something it once was not.
Although music continues to make so much money, some may argue it has come to something that’s much different than it started out being. People, like myself, argue that music has slowly changed from stories about life, to who can throw the most dollar bills at strippers. Although still entertaining, and still potential millions, it may eventually ruin that escape-goat for people. Many feel that in order for people to remember you, making meaningful hits is what is more important. Tupac and Biggie were remembered for the quality or their music… they also died for that same reason, but that’s a different story. However, for many entertainers, it’s the amount of money they make, not how many people remember them when they are dead. Although it is hard to see music stay the same because the amount of internet piracy, many hope it never fades.
In conclusion, music has become essential in everyday life. It helps people complete tasks and continues to make people millions of dollars. I hope bringing light to the issue helps in keeping music alive (I doubt I can do that alone).
